Largo's Horizon West Bay Project Wins AIA Award for Sustainability

The new Horizon West Bay has yet to break ground, and it has already begun receiving honors. In partnership with ASD|Sky, the new downtown project to include City Hall received the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Tampa Bay’s new Sustainability Award. This award was created to recognize that 2020 was a life-changing year and has brought a new focus on adaptability and resilience in architecture and design as we know it.

The new, mixed-use, Horizon West Bay project is being developed as a sustainable, energy-efficient, and resilient facility for the years ahead. The goal is to make this complex a shining example of the benefits sustainable design can have on a community and most directly on the people that use this new City Center.

The project will feature sprawling solar panels, reclaimed water features, rainwater harvesting cisterns, and more. With over 40,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space on the ground floor, this project will also contribute to the economic prosperity of the downtown district.

"The new facility will help to promote downtown development and spur the economic future of this district," said Largo City Manager, Henry Schubert. "It will help to achieve our vision for an active and interconnected downtown that is welcoming, family-friendly, and safe, all while preserving and incorporating natural elements and green space."

The project’s lead Architect, John Curran of ASD|Sky, adds, "Horizon West Bay is an expression of smart design that will allow the City of Largo to save money and educate their citizens on the benefits of sustainability principles by infusing daylight into the green corridor and utilizing resilient and sustainable materials."

Horizon West Bay includes City Hall, retail space, and a parking garage. It will be located on the northern 400 block of West Bay Drive. Groundbreaking is set to start in 2022 and Largo looks forward to opening the doors in early 2024.
