Vice Mayor John Carroll Travels to D.C. for FAST Fly-In Advocacy Trip

The City ofLargo’s Vice Mayor John Carroll traveled to Washington, D.C., last week to meet with members of Florida’s congressional delegation and advocate for key federal issues that affect municipalities, including the City of Largo.

"Building personal, genuine, and authentic relationships with federal and state legislators is central to the City of Largo’s legislative advocacy efforts. It is essential that elected officials at each level of government appreciate and respect our respective roles so that we can work well with one another and serve our constituents as effectively and efficiently as possible,"  said Vice Mayor John Carroll.

Vice Mayor Carroll was joined by 42 other local leaders from throughout the state, all of whom are members of the Florida League of Cities Federal Action Strike Team (FAST). FAST is responsible for advocating the League’s federal priorities to the Florida Congressional delegation. The trip, known as the FAST Fly-In, is a biannual advocacy trip for FAST members.

During their time in our nation’s capital, local leaders focused their discussions on key priority issues including infrastructure, cybersecurity, re-authorization of the National Flood Insurance Program and the federal preemption of small cell infrastructure deployment.

The group met with 24 members of Florida’s congressional delegation, including Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott and Representatives Charlie Crist and Kathy Castor. FAST members also attended a briefing with the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs where they spoke with representatives from the National Security Council, the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Transportation, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Economic Development Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency.

This is the second time that Vice Mayor Carroll has traveled to Washington, D.C. as a member of the Federal Action Strike Team.

Vice Mayor Carroll serves on the Board of Directors of the Florida League of Cities and is currently serving as the President of the Suncoast League of Cities. The Suncoast League of Cities (SLC) consists of 25 member cities in 3 counties and represents over one million citizens.  SLC works closely with and is supported by the Florida League of Cities in representing the interests of West Central Florida’s municipalities to the Florida Legislature, the Executive Office of the Governor as well as state agencies.
