With the holiday decorations all set up and the excitement of the season in the air, it's easy to forget about safety precautions and careful behavior. Many safety and home security issues come up that you might not have considered. Follow these safety tips for the holidays to ensure that you are safe and prepared, and can enjoy your happy holidays free of stress and worry.

Holiday Theft
Theft overall tends to rise in November and December. The best thing to do is to secure what you can. Lock your vehicles and homes.

If you purchase gifts online and have them shipped to your home, request signature confirmation or ask a neighbor to hold it for you to avoid possible theft.

Test Fire Detectors
Test your smoke alarms monthly to make sure they work, and be sure to install smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms on every level of your home.

Grease Fires

Take extra precautions with turkey fryers and always fry outside in a well-ventilated area. Recycle your used cooking oils at Largo's 24 hour Recycling Center.

Live Trees
Have a live tree? Make sure to water daily and check lights broken and exposed wires. Recycle your Christmas tree and cardboard boxes for free with the City from December 26 through January 12.

Keep the Wreath Green
Home fires are frequent during the holiday season due to unattended cooking, improper use of holiday decor and home heating. Follow these safety tips from Largo Fire Rescue to prevent home fires during the holidays.

Decorations and Holiday Lights
Use heavy-duty extension cords, and only use cords outdoors if they are designated for outdoor use. Also, use a timer or turn off lights before going to bed or if you will be away from home.

Social Media and Traveling
If you’re traveling, wait to post until after your trip. Let a trustworthy neighbor know if you’re planning to go out of town for the holiday season, so that they can keep an eye on your home.
