City of Largo Honored with 2021 Home Rule Hero Award

The Florida League of Cities, the united voice for Florida’s municipal governments, recently recognized City of Largo Mayor Woody Brown, Commissioner Jamie Robinson, and Commissioner John Carroll with a 2021 Home Rule Hero Award for their hard work and advocacy efforts during the 2021 Legislative Session. These individuals worked tirelessly throughout session to promote local voices making local choices, protect the Home Rule powers of Florida’s municipalities and advance the League’s legislative agenda.

"It is an honor to be recognized by the Florida League," Mayor Brown said. "City Commissioners and Mayors across this state are elected to govern their respective cities.  Unfortunately, local leaders must continue to fight for the ability to respond to our residents and businesses and to preserve the very things that make our cities unique."

Home Rule is the ability for a city to address local problems with local solutions with minimal state interference. Home Rule Hero Award recipients are local government officials, both elected and non-elected, who consistently responded to the League’s request to reach out to members of the legislature and help give a local perspective on an issue.

"I am deeply honored to once again be recognized by the Florida League of Cities as a Home Rule Hero,” said Commissioner Carroll. "This award reinforces my belief that experience in local government should be a prerequisite for those seeking higher office, and it serves as a reminder of my commitment to our community and to my oath of office.”
