Date of Record: December 20, 2010

Starting January 1, 2011, Southwest Recreation Complex will begin offering the nationally recognized, Healthways SilverSneakers® Fitness Program. Designed exclusively for older adults, SilverSneakers offers an innovative blend of physical activity, healthy lifestyle direction and social opportunities. Published third-party studies have found individuals who participate in SilverSneakers programs have lower medical costs and require fewer hospital admissions.

SilverSneakers is available to Medicare beneficiaries at little or no additional cost through many Medicare health plans, Medicare Supplement carriers and group retiree plans. Enrollees receive a fitness membership at a local participating location, with access to thousands of fitness venues throughout the country where they can enjoy the fitness, fun and friends for which the acclaimed program is known.

"We are very excited to offer this program at the Southwest Recreation Complex. We have a lot to offer to those enrolled in the program, from the pool and exercise room, to classes and social events," states Southwest Recreation Manager, Jennifer McMahon.

Individuals with a SilverSneakers Membership are given access to a variety of programs and classes offered at Southwest Recreation. Participant benefits include a daily fitness pass, daily pool admission, and classes including Fit Over 50, Chair Exercise, Aqua Fit & Trim, Rusty Hinges and a specific SilverSneakers class called Muscle Strength and Range of Movement.
