Important Notice to Business Owners Regarding Time Period for Converting Pole Signs to Monument Signs

This page is to inform you of an important date that is approaching for converting pole signs to monument signs. On June 5, 2007, the Largo City Commission approved comprehensive changes to the City's Sign Code. One of the key changes involves the transition from pole signs to monument signs with the intent to create an aesthetic in keeping with the community's desires. Pole signs are now considered non-conforming; the new standard requires freestanding signs to be monument style signs with a maximum height of eight (8) feet. A ten year amortization period for non-conforming signs was established with the new sign ordnance in order to help businesses with non-conforming pole signs recover the costs of these signs and budget funds for a new monument sign. All property owners and tenants should note that there are five (5) years remaining on the 2007 sign amortization period. As of June 5, 2017, all non-conforming signs will be required to be removed.

Tiered Early Sign Replacement Program


The Largo City Commission has established a financial assistance program for the early replacement of pole signs prior to the end of the City of Largo's amortization period, June 5, 2017. Review the program Submittal Checklist and download a copy of the Program Packet, which includes an application.

The Tiered Early Sign Replacement Program will begin on October 1, 2012. Properties within the West Bay Drive and Clearwater-Largo Road Community Redevelopment Districts are not eligible for the program at this time.

New monument signs constructed during this fiscal year will be eligible to for a 25% sign square footage bonus* based on the size of the property's maximum size monument sign allowed under the City of Largo's Comprehensive Development Code. Monument signs may not exceed the eight (8) foot maximum height requirement. Additionally, the City of Largo will offer ten (10) grants on a first-come, first-served basis, in an amount not to exceed $200 per grant to cover costs related to new sign construction, on behalf of the award recipient, for the following:

  • Building permit fees

  • Building permit application fees

  • Planning Review Fees

  • Engineering Review Fees

  • Demolition Fees

The program offerings will be the same as in year 2012-2013 except that monument signs will eligible for a 25% sign square footage bonus* and no grants will be offered.

October 1, 2014- September 30,2015

The program offerings will be the same as in year 2012-2013 except that monument signs will eligible for a 15% sign square footage bonus* and no grants will be offered.

October 1,2015-September 30,2016

The program guidelines will be the same as in year 2012-2013 except that monument signs will eligible for a 10% sign square footage bonus* and no grants will be offered.
* The sign square footage bonus may be applied towards wall signage or may be "banked" for use at a later time.
