EMS/Professional Standards

The division of Professional Standards oversees the department's training and EMS programs, as well as manages all personnel certifications, workers compensation claims, citizen complaints, internal affairs issues, and department promotions.

The training program facilitates quality training to the members of the department, through an assistant chief.

Firefighter training includes:
  • Fire fighting operations
  • Company evolutions based on National Standards
  • Hazardous materials and bio-terrorism awareness
  • High-rise operations
  • Natural gas and electrical hazard awareness.
  • Confined space and trench collapse procedures
  • Officer Development
The division is responsible for certification of driver/operators for engine, truck, squad, and acting officer. Administration of the probationary firefighter program is an ongoing responsibility.

Another responsibility of the training program is the safety of department members. A safety committee consisting of representatives from each station meets every quarter to discuss any safety issues that may arise and to assist with recommendations to correct any deficiencies. An Incident Safety Officer Program has been implemented to assist with on-scene fire ground operations. Fire scenes are routinely monitored for the presence of dangerous fire gases.
