APWA Accreditation

The City of Largo Public Works Department is among over 200 Public Works Agencies in the United States and Canada that are participating in the American Public Works Association's (APWA) Accreditation Program. This process includes the completion of a Departmental-Wide Self Assessment, application for Accreditation, a Site Review, and a vote by the APWA Accreditation Council.

Accreditation is a process in which the Department gauges its management practices against best practices established nation-wide by the American Public Works Association. Through a review of the APWA Best Management Practices Manual, the Department determines compliance. This provides the Department a means to improve their operations internally to better meet the needs of the public.

The Department underwent its Accreditation Site Review in 2008 and was found to be in Full Compliance with over 95% of the practices applicable, and 5% in Substantial Compliance. Among our practices, the City of Largo Public Works Strategic Plan was earmarked as a "Model Practice" by the Site Review Team to be presented to other cities wishing to become accredited.

The City of Largo is the American Public Works Association's 50th Accredited Public Works Agency.

In 2012, the Department went through it's first re-accreditation process in which the same processes and practices were professionally reviewed by peers in the professional community. Upon completion of that review all but two practices were found to be fully compliant, and the City was granted Re-Accreditation through 2016.
