Responsible for the protection of lives and property by performing skilled, specialized work of varied difficulty combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires; working in hazardous toxic environments; performing rescue/emergency medical and disaster relief services. Duties often require the performance of hazardous tasks under emergency conditions which may involve extreme physical exertion in heat, smoke, and other hazardous and toxic environments. Work is performed as a member of a team and supervised by a superior officer.


Responds to fire alarms with fire company; advancing preconnects to burning buildings while wearing self-contained breathing apparatus, carry lights, tools and equipment in order to extinguish fires and search for and rescue victims. Raises and climbs ladders; ventilates burning buildings to release smoke and gases; performs salvage and overhaul; reduces water damage and secures dangerous scenes. Responds to fire alarms with fire company, rescuing victims from natural disasters, collapse, entrapment, and waterways, utilizing mechanical and hand tools; cuts or pries open vehicles to gain access to trapped victims; carries or transports unconscious or conscious victims down ladders and stairs; assists in patient care. May be assigned to or as a driver of rescue, engine, truck, squad or other related apparatus. Performs maintenance on fire and rescue apparatus and equipment, cleans and maintains stations, grounds and equipment. Participates in public education demonstrations, tours, and company/department drills; attends instruction sessions on topics related to fire, EMS, hazardous materials, public education, and inspections. Prepares written reports by accessing and entering information on a computer system. Reviews fire science literature, standard operating procedures, and related rules and regulations. Required to work as part of a team for 24-hour shifts, encompassing holidays and weekends. Performs related work as required.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to learn, after a period of schooling and training, a wide variety of firefighting and EMS duties and methods, the inspection and operation of firefighting apparatus, equipment and tools. Ability to readily acquire a knowledge of computers, the street system and physical layout of the City. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to successfully complete basic course of fire training prescribed. Some technical and mechanical aptitude.

Training and Experience:

High school diploma or GED. Ability to complete other training and courses as set forth by departmental regulations. Possession of a valid Class E Florida Driver's License. Possession of a valid Florida Certificate of Compliance for EMT and Firefighter.

Selection Requirements Include:

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or eligible to work in the United States.
  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent
  • Possess a Florida firefighter certificate.
  • Possess current Florida EMT certificate.
  • Must be a non-tobacco user for a minimum of 1 year prior to hire and thereafter.

  • Neither have been convicted of a felony or of a misdemeanor, nor have plead nolo contendere to any charge. If an applicant has been convicted of a felony, such applicant must be in compliance with state statute 112.011(2)(b). If an applicant has been convicted of a misdemeanor, such applicant shall be excluded from employment for a period of 4 years after expiration of such sentence.

  • While on duty or in uniform, visible tattoos and/or body piercings are prohibited unless approved by the fire chief.

  • Never have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.

  • Must possess a valid Florida Class E driver's license.

  • Have passed a physical examination by a licensed physician in accordance with NFPA 1582 standards.
  • Have a good moral character.
  • Successfully complete a background investigation.

Grounds for Deferment or Disqualification Include (but are not limited to):

  • Having used tobacco products within the past one (1) year
  • Having visible body ornaments (tattoos/body piercings) not approved by the fire chief while wearing department assigned uniforms.
  • Omission or falsification of information provided to the City of Largo that would materially affect screening or employment decisions, including but not limited to: the pre-intake questionnaire, registration, personal history form, administrative interview, polygraph or supporting documentation.
  • Within the last ten years, the use, sale or possession of any other illegal drugs that would be a felony by Florida State Statute.
  • Within the last ten years, the use of marijuana, hashish or other derivatives on ten or more occasions.
  • Having two or more driver's license revocations and/or suspensions during the applicant's lifetime for driving violations, point accumulation, or failure to appear or pay a fine. (This does not include suspensions for insurance or other administrative concerns).
  • Any theft from a fire department, from a fire or rescue scene, or from a fire or rescue victim.
  • On-duty consumption of alcoholic beverages unless some consumption was permitted by the employing agency.
  • Any falsification of an official report, record, or document.
  • Acceptance of any bribe, or accepting a gratuity in violation of the employing agency's regulations.
  • Failure to achieve a passing score on required written examinations and failure to meet the minimum time in the physical abilities test.
  • While an adult--the commission of any other detected or undetected felony crime. Commission as a juvenile may be grounds for disqualification.

  • Use of alcohol that resulted in 3 or more alcohol-related arrests or other alcohol-related illegal conduct that affects moral character or demonstrates a substantial history or poor judgement.

  • Possession or use of marijuana, hashish or its derivatives within the past 6 months.
  • Gambling that results in an arrest or conviction.

  • Conviction of a misdemeanor within the last 5 years.

  • Conviction of a criminal traffic offense (DUI, reckless driving, etc) within the last 5 years.

  • Conviction of three or more moving traffic violations within the last two years. (In such cases, processing will be deferred until a year has elapsed from the date of the last conviction.) Violations cleared by attendance at driver's education courses must be listed and will be counted in the number of violations and the dates of any resulting deferment.
  • Suspension or revocations of driver's license for accumulation of points within the last three years, as measured from the date on which the suspension was imposed.

  • Suspension of driver's license for financial responsibility (uninsured motorist violations) within the last year, as measured form the date the suspension was imposed. Proof must be provided of being an insured driver prior to resumption of processing.

  • Failure to keep the City of Largo notified of current address and telephone number will result in deferment of processing, inactivation of file, or removal from the candidate pool.
