Cover-Police Chief MagAs part of the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) Standards that the Largo Police Department adheres to, we conduct periodic citizen surveys. In each of the surveys distributed to the citizens of Largo, the overwhelming response for direction of police service is in the area of traffic safety.

Back in 2001, the Largo Police Department created a traffic safety unit to address the concerns of our community. Since that time traffic safety has become the number one priority for our agency. In addition to the responsibilities undertaken by our traffic safety unit, every patrol officer is also encouraged to maintain vigilant enforcement of traffic laws on the streets of Largo.

We are proud of our accomplishments over the past several years building upon each success year after year. We will continue this bold initiative to make the streets of our community safe for pedestrians, bicyclists, and the motoring public in general.

In addition to the enforcement of all traffic laws, the Largo Police Department also has an impaired driving enforcement unit. Two officers are assigned to our nighttime shifts to detect and arrest individuals who are driving impaired and putting our community at risk. As part of that effort, the Largo Police Department has also undertaken the initiative to send officers to drug recognition expert school. Three Largo police officers are now at the disposal of the department to assist in cases where drug recognition expertise is needed.

If you have a suggestion to improve traffic safety, or a specific problem area, please contact Sgt. George Edmiston at gedmisto@largo.com.
